Life Christian Adventure (LCA) invites you to Train to Hunt South Africa’s first event

Train to hunt is an extreme event for bow hunters. It will test the contestants’ shooting ability and fitness level over a course of 1.6km – 2.4km with ten 3D targets (you will need 10 arrows for the event) spaced over the distance of the course. Hunting setup will be used, excluding broad heads, as well as a back pack with an 8kg sand bag in it, to simulate water and food carried on a walk and stalk. It will be a time trail with time being deducted for a kill shot, and time added for a wound or miss shot. In the end the total time will be calculated, lowest time being the winner.

Date: 18 October 2014
Location: Extreme Archery (GPS coordinates 26°20'32.2"S 28°01'26.2"E)
RSVP: Before 10 October 2014 (e-mail:henrie@lifeca.org)
Cost: R100/person

Why I train to hunt

My life has been profoundly altered in many ways since adulthood, and my wife and kids are at the top of the list. They are people who have made me a better man. My wife is a health nut, which pretty much makes me a healthy eater by default. As far as fitness is concerned, it has always been a blast here, a blast there, but never a long term habitual thing. I was always the hunter that went out before season and “got in shape” (pretty half-assed shape at that if I’m honest) and really wasn’t in shape till the end of the season. The result, especially as I got older (I’m 43) was that my hunting suffered because of it.

Then, I heard about Train to Hunt owned by Kenton Clairmont. Kenton’s Train to Hunt competitions, online workouts, and some personal coaching has forever changed my physical life. I eat clean, and train for hunting (happily I might add), year round. It’s the competitions that keep me going when I don’t want to. They are my motivation! And with the easy, low cost online workouts, it’s something new and interesting every day. It’s easy to stay on track with little amounts of time.

With the cornerstone being the competitions, it’s important to know my story there as well. Two and a half years ago (when my “before” photo was taken) I was at the highest stress point in my life. In fact, the “before” was me, wanting to remember to never be where I was again. I had to wear that contraption for 2 days because my heart was going out of rhythm as a result of too much stress and no physical outlet. I’ve never had that problem since, by the way.

Anyhoo… I had heard about the competition just a few months prior to the event, and when I showed up I was totally intimidated to look like an idiot and embarrass myself. A foot injury allowed me a easy excuse to sit out, so I watched the event and helped Kenton with the judging. At the event, I saw that many of the competitors were just like myself, not in great shape, but challenging themselves and competing anyway.

I got pissed and said to myself that I would be ready for the next one, and did exactly that. My training went to the whole next level and I pushed myself harder than I ever had before. The next year, I placed well in both events and had a blast doing it. This year I’m even stronger, and can’t wait to run against the young’ns. My goal is to qualify for the National Championships in Denver.

As a final note to anyone reading this, who may be on the fence about hitting an event this summer, DO IT. There is still plenty of time to get ready and here is a good place to start. It will be a game changer in your hunting life and the people who compete have become good friends. I hope to see you there. My intimidation was unfounded, and silly and only delayed the blessing Train to Hunt has been to me.
