Hunting with the family

Hunting with the family

by Johann Hershensohn

Maiden shoot for daughter and wife on the same weekend.

It was not planned, but in my experience the best things in life aren’t. Since she was about eight years old, my daughter Nika has harassed me to let her hunt. An avid hunter myself, I of course felt she had to be old enough first to understand the ethos of hunting. In my reckoning, one hunts for a very specific reason. In fact, I am a firm believer that your first shoot should be a rite of passage. That said, I am not a fan of senseless hunting for its own sake, as this diminishes the experience. Therefore we need to raise our children responsibly, and inculcate this understanding of hunting in them.
