Are there many other falconers on here? If so where are you based and what are you flying at the moment? I'm based between Durban and PMB and I'm flying a second hand 6 times intermewed female African Goshawk. I have had her for two seasons. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I knew a guy once, Mark Labuschagne, who was a master falconeer.

He would bring his birds and his dogs to the farm and hunt mostly pheasant and duck.

It was always something spectacular to see the dogs chase the birds up and watch the falcons come swooping down to get them! But not an easy sport if I remember correctly. The bird's weight has to be correct etc.....

Anyhow, It certainly is something different!

It is was a reasonably hard sport but not to bad. It's a very interesting topic. I love hunting with my gos it's the best thing under the sun in opinion. As soon as I have photos I'll post them most likely when I start hunting with her again.

How do one start/get into this?

First find your local club each province has one that is part of the South African Falconry Association. Then you need to find a mentor close to you and become an apprentice. The you can work your way through the grading system.

I started with falconry when I moved to the UAE and was flying falcons everyday for the 6 years I lived there.

Use to train birds for displays and pest control and done a fair amount of hunting. Its an mazing sport, and would love to find the time to start again.

Beautiful birds. What were the Gyr/Lanner and Gyr/Merlin like as hunting birds? They are stunning.

These birds was bred by Howard Waller. Amazing birds by an amazing falconer and breeder.
Friend of mine are still flying them and using them for pigeon control.
