I have been calling or whistling foxes for many years now and in this period I have tried various mouth callers with the Tenterfield style being my favourite. The only real disadvantage I see with the mouth caller is your target has the opportunity to find your location far easier than with a remote caller. This is where my interest began to stem with remote electronic callers but it has only been recently that I decided to take the plunge and purchase the Icotec GC500.
The price of around the $300 mark is very attractive IMO when you consider what some of the others cost. What really got my interest was the ability to be able to add my own calls and the distance that was able to be obtained between the caller and the remote. It has a listed range of 300mtrs non line of sight but during my testing I had no issue obtaining closer to 400yds line of sight. Not that you would ever really need to be this far away from the actual caller, it does add a new dimension. Some of the standard calls are quite good but are more specific to American game and rodents. It didn’t take long for me to make up my own MP3 calls for a variety of species and over the last couple of months I have given it a fair go. I didn’t have much luck with my dog calls/howls at this stage but it was very successful with Fallow deer and more recently I gave it a good run on the foxes.

What has worked really well on the foxes is starting with the Tenterfield and then swapping to the Icotec with many shot less than a metre from the caller. Now I could probably get my Tenterfield a little louder than the Icotec if I really tried but with my recordings set to a peak of 0db the GC500 was no slouch and wasn’t lacking for volume. In many situations I never needed to run it at full volume. The ability to not only select you calls with a very good back lit display but to alter the volume and also be able to save your favorites for quick access is brilliant.
Now if my memory serves me correctly I am sure you can have up to 200 calls loaded on the GC500 which is far more than I could ever see me using. The other thing that really impressed me was battery life and at this stage I am still on the original 9v battery in the remote and I have only changed the 4AA’s in the actual caller because I was concerned it would go flat after the couple of weekends I had already used it. So I would be surprised if you didn’t get at least a weekends worth of entertainment out of a set of Duracells. The GC500 is the top of the Icotec range at this stage and I would highly recommend buying this unit over its little brothers as the display on the remote really helps to make the unit IMO. I am yet to purchase and try the waggler/decoy attachment that can also be turned on/off via the remote but that could only just step it up another notch from what I have experienced so far.
As I see it at this stage is that it won't replace my mouth callers but it will be used in conjunction and won't be too far away when I am thinking about calling in a variety of animals. The callers limits are endless if you are prepared to put in the time and load up and try a few different sounds.
I have no affiliation with this product but I like to give credit where it is due. The GC500 is well worth the money and a very effective hunting tool to keep in your arsenal Onya
