470 WSM

Next fun project and another in the WSM line up of calibres based of the 300 WSM - CMC Mountaineer in 470 WSM
Started life as a 243 and I just happened to have a spare LW 474cal barrel.
Cut the chamber using a 300 WSM reamer with a 470cal pilot and then following it with a 470cal neck and throat reamer.
Bolt opened and action altered to suit
I could now fireform using 458WSM donor cases in the chamber,
At the range, I simply held onto the barrel action by hand and pulled trigger, bit of fun
Could now use the formed cases to draw up the chamber reamer to suit, then have it made.
Pays to future proof along the way
I went with a Hogue synthetic stock and detachable mag set up, which allows 8 in mag if my memory serves me,
Brett from BDR Custom Stocks fitted up one of my favorite recoil pads, the 1 3/8” Kickeez Magnum.
Gearing up to fit bases for a scope, I realised the rear base did not align with the front base, typical for CMC, Howa etc actions.
Had to level it up in the mill and run a dial indicator between the front and rear bases to see how far they were out.
Turns out the rear of the rear base was lower again, so had to use different shim to level it up. Took a few laps back and forth with the dial indicator, got there in the end.
All done and worked out well
Next was some reloading,
Can load all standard .474cal projectiles, depending on requirements
Woodleigh 500grn RN
Woodleigh 500 Hydros
Atomic 29 480grn
Bertram 500grn RN
Hornady 325grn XTPs
Functions well and with a gut load of 06H or 07 throws the 500s around 2000 out of the 22 ¼” barrel in a 6 ¼ LB rifle
