Legal firearm ownership age question.
Please be of assistance. As I understand our Firearm Control act, the minimum legal age to apply / own a firearm is 21 years of age. Now here is my question. Is there any possible exemption / motivation to this law that could allow someone younger than 21 to legally own a firearm?

Re: Legal firearm ownership age question.
Yes there is. If you have gained enough practical knowledge and completed adult hunting courses to obtain dedicated status, then a 16 year old could be successful in getting a licence. Some youngsters have inherited game farms where a firearm is essential and the Act will allow such granting of a licence in these instances.

Dedicated status and a real good motivation is the answer.

My son got his first license at 16 via dedicated sportman status. He tagged along on the veldskiet competitions (he was a junior member) and participated in enough shoots to get dedicated status.

Re: Legal firearm ownership age question.
I have met a boy who got his first license (hunting rifle) at age 12. Not the norm, but it has been done. Another boy had 6 licenses on his name when he was merely 15.
Normally, I would wait untill age 16 before applying for competency. Dedicated status and good motivation should do it. There are many 16 year olds who are license holders.
The FCA spells out all the exceptions to the 21 yo rule. Dedicated status, collector, gainfully employed, exceptional circumstances...

I got my first license before age 21, with Dedicated hunter status and motivation that I need my own rifle to pursue my passion without having to use a borrowed rifle and all the legal issues that go along with it...
