I was delighted to find out that there are working windhonde in SA.
I would really like to see pictures of boerwindhonde en saluki crosses as you have them in SA.
So I open a picture topic, starting with mine. I am not in SA but in the Netherlands (ik kan afrikaans lezen maar niet schrijven) and this is my dog for hare, 4 years old 23 kilos.
Dai lyk vir my na 'n m@erse haas of is dit net die foto wat dit so laat lyk? Mens sal 'n haas pie en 'n half met hom kan maak! Ek onthou toe ek in USA gewerk het was die Jack Rabbits vir my net so merwaardig groot.
Foxcreek.
Food grown in depleted soils is itself deficient, and animal products derived from stressed beasts bear a burden of guilt.
Hi Lennard.
Welcome to our forum, if you look under jaghonde and then under windhonde, gps, legendes en harthonde there are some photos of my greyhounds and others. This is the type of dog we use over here, strong, well built, fast but with alot of stamina, they weigh about 40 to 45kg but most of all they must have the heart of a lion as we do alot of predator hunting with them, namely black backed jackal and lynx, both being able to put up a good fight. Our dogs have been selectively bred for many years to fix these characteristics in them. They are hard dogs to stand our tough terrein and climate.
Anyway just a short introduction on the type of hunting greyhound we have over here.
Thanks greyhound.
That is my reason for joining this forum. In SA you guys breed windhonde for hard conditions and game and not only for the race track. I've been looking at the site of the boerwindhonde vereniging and also in the topic you mention. Nice, very very nice.

I'm a Racing Greyhound Breeder here in South Africa, even if its illegal to race them here we still breed them and hope we can race them even if its just for fun..
I also used to hunt 'band text' with my Racing Greyhounds coz here in the area where i stay stamina wont help much only pure speed from the Irish blood lines and bit of stamina from the Aussie racing Greyhounds..
That dog of you what cross is he.? And do you use Racing Greyhound bloodlines..
And your dog looks very nice..
Dog is galgo, kind of spanish hunting greyhound. Lighter and more boney than the greyhounds that race on the tracks here. I have 2 dogs and no space/time for puppies now. If I want to breed I will cross with whippet, I need a light very fast dogs for rabbits mainly. They have to do the catching within 10 to 50 meters otherwise the rabbit is under the ground.
This is a pic of my other dog (bitch) in her prime, she is 13 now
Hi Lennard,
Very very nice dogs you have there.. I have been reading alot on thehuntinglife.com that they mainly cross the racing Greyhounds with Border Collie's for rabbit hunting that they call Lurchers, i like the name by the way.. But yeah i love my pure racing Greyhounds more than the Greyhounds that you will find here in South Africa, because the Greyhounds you find here is very big and is purely for Stamina and not much for speed.. If i may ask, do you breed these Galgo's now and then, and what is the cost of a pup..
We have lurchers too, mainly crosses of begian sheppards with greyhound. Nice but to big for me and too clever.
Cost of a well bred pure galgo would be around the 1000 euros I think.
I don't breed them and if I bred windhonde I would cross with whippet for speed and size. A pup from me would be a lot cheaper than 1000 euros if you can really convince me that it will have a nice life.
Do you have crosses of greyhound and saluki in SA?
Hi Lennard.
Sorry i have been busy..
I will love to get one Galgo here to SA but i'm no longer hunting..
You do find Greyhound x Saluki here in SA but i dont breed them.. And many ppl say they are good but not so fast i dont know.. There is a guy by the name Gert he is breeding very good dogs and mite be the best in SA you never know, many hunting ppl in SA know him and his dogs.. And many of his dogs is having Racing Greyhound blood or pure Saluki, not much SA Boerwindhond blood..
