Toyota Hilux 2.8 Engine Noise

Post by Konrad308 »

Good day

I have a 2018 Toyota Hilux 2.8

At 18000km i started getting a "ticking" sound from the engine. This sound starts around 1500rpm and stops at around 2500rpm. The dealer where i purchased the vehicle booked the vehicle in. The diagnostics found no problems. The dealer said it is injector noise and replaced 1 of the injectors. But the noise is still there.

The dealer does not seem to know what to do next.

Is there maybe someone here that also had a ticking sound and found a solution?

regards

I have had the same on my Ford Ranger 2.2 for the past 85000km, apparently it is timing orientated and cannot be changed...

And I am now also in the market for a hilux... not very re-assuring

I had an Opel Turbo Coupe that had a ticking noise for the entire 5 years/60000km I had it. It didn't cause any problems. The usual culprits are one or more of the following: fuel rail, injector, hydraulic lifter, sticking intake or exhaust valve.

Have you had an oil change yet? If you're lucky, you might just need fresh oil.

Also, my Subaru also ticks like that. I had a louder exhaust installed and now I don't hear it anymore XD

If the dealer does not know, who else will?

Take it to another dealer, or insist that a factory tech support guy inspect the vehicle. They have one in every district who visit dealerships on a regular basis.

But boy, fit an aftermarket loadbin matt and see how quick they are to decline an engine failure still under warranty!

The vehicle is still under warranty , drive it till the ticking noise becomes a knocking noise , much easier for dealer to diagnose a knocking noise if he can see the inside of the engine from the outside. >:D

This is standard practice for most of my Toyota customers ,they believe that Toyota"s never break.

Gelukkig koop ek net tweedehands so ek het nooit 'n warranty om mee te begin nie.

My Dad has just sold his 2.8 due to Toyota "not finding any problem sir" mentality. His previous 3.0 Legend was at 3 (three) dealers for no power. They replaced injectors, looms and took diesel samples. StefL on the forum here still collected the bakkie from the dealer and drove it home for my Dad one of the 3 times it went back to the dealers. After all that we found the fuel filter was dirty, and the warning light didn't work, hence it was not replaced!!!!! Is that not where you start if a vehicle has power issue's!!!!

I run a workshop and I experience faulty new parts and new vehicle with factory problems all the time. I don't blame a dealer for this, but when they cannot find a problem and then just stop????

So on my Dad's 2.8 he complanied about the diff at 37 000km. It sounded like a superbike was passing the bakkie when you went past 80km/h. They replaced the diff no questions. The new diff also made a noise, but they said no it is correct. Then the transfer case went bang. This is on a auto vehicle that was never abused. They replaced that also, but the diff still had a noise on it. We took the vehicle to a different dealer for 50 000km service as my Mom had to be in that area for the day. She complained about the noise in the diff, but they still didn't acknowledge the problem. They delivered the vehicle to my sisters house later that day. The delivery driver told her that the bakkie was broken he thinks as it makes a very bad noise. My Dad took it back to the dealer asking a saleman to drive the bakkie as he wants to sell it. The saleman immediately said the diff is making a bad noise and would have to be replaced before the sale :o

They replaced the diff and my Dad drove it straight from Toyota to volkswagen for a swap.

I work with dealers everyday of the week in the truck industry and we find as soon as a certain brand reaches a point where the workshop cannot keep with the sales in that area, service becomes poor due to the workshop being under constant pressure to do more. I drove Fords for a long time due to our local dealer doing brilliant service's and client relations. As soosn as the 3.2 and high sales was reachd this also changed.

Take it to a different dealer. No engine should make any noise at 18 000km it is not a 6cyl petrol motor with lazy hydraulic lifters. at 10 000km service interval the oil should be fine. My Hilux has 20 000km on now and is dead quite on the motor.

Oor 2de handse kar koop. 'n Oom wat 'n CA is, 2 versekeringsreuse gestig het en in Mauritius gaan aftree het het ook destyds gesê hy koop nie 'n nuwe kar nie, dis geldmors...
