TheQM – What do you need in a Get Home Bag?

Post by Camouflage762 »

We’ve probably all heard of a Bug Out Bag, but let’s assume you need to get back home.
Assuming that you are a minimum of 24hrs away from home, all transportation has come to a halt, no electricity, and for good measure no water available on your route. The country is for all intents and purposes in a high level lockdown.
You’re alone, stranded and need to get home where you have everything you need to survive indefinitely.

From the gear available at TheQuarterMaster, what would you put in your Get Home Bag?
The bag needs to be person portable. But nothing else is prohibited.

From Swimma
Thank you for your input.
If you can think of anything else to go into a Get Home Bag, let us know:

Never a bad thing to keep in the car. It can also double up as a 'as and when needed' bag.

Some essentials to consider:
Good pair of shoes and socks
Fleece and a windproof
Waterproof jacket/poncho
Medical kit based on your level of training - I divide this into minor and major injuries. Don't neglect minor injuries, because they will become major very quickly if you're out and about
Medicines for the basics, such as headaches, diaharea, nausea
Good knife
Food
Water and a means to purify/store
Matches and lighter
Compass
Crowbar
Buff
Eye protection of some sorts
Hat
Gloves
Powerbank
Torch and/or headtorch
Spare ammo if you have a firearm

Would a couple of MRE meals be an idea to save space and weight?

Mentioned by CorditeCrazy:
• A map, be it a (or a number of) topographic or even a road map. Direction helps when having to dogleg home.
• Money, say R300 in small denominations, just in case you need to pay for something or buy your way out of or through something.

From BushNomad:
I carry a military rectangular waterproof
It has press studs , ties & cords around the edges so that it can be
Variously be configured / used as:

Rectangular ground sheet
A-‘frame’ tent shelter (floor + 2 sides )
Poncho
Sleeping Bag Cover
Shade Sail

Its light but strong & can be compactly
rolled up :
… to perhaps 1ft long by 6”” diameter.

I also carry a thin fully waterproof pullover
Windbreaker that packs into itself to a small bag. Worn over a woollen jersey it is better
Than an anorak etc

Also carry
LeatherMan/Swiss Army Multitool
Larger Bowie Type Knife
Spare Car keys
Dixie pan set
Etc
Etc

And Paul reminding us to always take some chocolate to keep the energy levels up.
