This was my first hunt with GSCHV bullets, but definitely not my last!"

Ja ek dink ook n jagter het geluk aan sy kant nodig as so iets gebeur,ons het saterdag 8 skote verloor toe ons deur rooigras geskiet het
Ek dink wel jou kans is aansienlik beter met n mono as dit wel gebeur
Ek dink nie mens kan tot n gevolgtrekking kom en se omdat die GSHV die dier gedood het en dat dit wel een of twee keer gebeur dit gaan wel weer gebeur nie!
So is dit ook nie te se dat n loodkern koeel dit nie ook kan doen nie, en geluk kan daar ook seker aan n man se kant wees. Dit is wel nie die norm nie, maar so ook nie met die mono nie!

Here is some information for you guys and girls out there who want to experiment with your 303?s.
A few years ago, oom Kassie Kasselman from QPS enquired if I would be interested to reload for my 303 using S355, then the latest Somchem product on the civilian market. The main focus for this request stems from the fact that 215grain bullets could until then not be loaded to their full potential in South Africa, especially using local components throughout. Local powders in use, S335 and S341 could not reliably propel 215grain Rhinos, Claws and Woodleighs to even 2200?/s from the average 303.
First and foremost in this approach was to get a case with as much powder capacity as possible, as any slower-burning powder in any calibre requires a higher charge weight than the fast powder it replaces. So that phased PMP cases out of the project.
I obtained some 215grain Rhino bullets from Hi-Tech in Benoni and loaded up a few loads in fire-formed Winchester-Western cases. These cases weigh in at around 172gr each, enabling me to load up to 43.5gr of S355 with COL of 75mm with the Rhinos. Freebore from that length is 0,5mm. My 303?s barrel has 1:9? anticlockwise twist and has 5 lands which engrave around 60% of the bullet?s surface. I started at 42gr and velocity from my 25 3/8? barrel was 2245?/s with 4 shots going into 33mm at 100m, deadrested. My rifle is unscoped, but is fitted with a Parker Hale Bisley-type precision peep sight. 42.5gr returned 2275?/s, 3 shots going into 38mm with one ?flyer? opening the group to 48mm. I attribute that flyer to myself.
With these two sets of loads, I measured the case dimensions very carefully before and after firing. On both loads, the pressure ring diameter from full-sized, minus one-half turn on the sizing die, condition was 11,53mm. After firing, the dimensions were 0,03mm larger at 11,56mm. Interesting feedback came from the case lengths, which surprised me no end. Before firing, the cases all measured 56,38mm. After firing, some were the same length, while others decreased slightly in length. This measurement indicates directly that the pressure limit of the action had not been exceeded. I have no other means of measuring the pressure level, but on rear-lockers like the Lee actions, this is a very clear indicator of pressure exceedance. My control was a W-W case loaded up with PMP 174gr ball, propelled by an average load of 40gr of S335, which returned 2475?/s. The pressure ring grew by 0,45mm and the case stretched by 0,2mm.
With these results on the 215?s, I approached Rudi Visser, who operates a No I Mk III with new Truvelo bull-barrel, 24? with 1:10 clockwise twist, 4 lands that engrave about 30% of the bullet. We loaded up some 215gr Rhinos into his (161gr) Remington-Peters cases with 43 and 43.5gr of S355, COL 74,5mm, freebore 0,5mm. These loads retuned 2300 and 2360?/s respectively, both loads grouping well into 30mm at 100m. (His rifle is scoped). His cases showed the same signs as mine: Zero stretching.
I tested 175gr Rhinos as well in my rifle, using R-P cases this time around, and loaded to 75mm COL. I loaded up to 47gr of S355. Results were: 45.5gr (2576?/s), 46gr (2600?/s), 46.5gr (2618?/s) and 47gr (2633?/s). Here I only shot two-shot groups, as bullet stocks were limited. All 8 bullets above landed in the same 40mm circle at 100m!
What is the reasoning behind wanting higher velocities with heavy bullets? Hunters have to take into cognisance the construction of all three the 215gr bullets mentioned above. All are prime bullets, very strongly constructed. Less than 2200?/s at the muzzle is too low velocity to cause the bullet to mushroom reliably in animals if the impact distance is more than 50m. Also, if the velocity is upped a little, it does wonders for the trajectory and the 215?s can now suddenly be used at ranges of up to, and most probably exceeding, 200m on even bigger animals. Very few bullets have the ?punch? of a 215gr 303 bullet. Fotunately, most 303 barrels seem to ?like? 215 and 175gr Rhinos and 215 Claws and Woodleighs, so it sort of makes sense to me to utilize these bullets.
I tested some 174gr PMP Boattail Ball as well, and these bullets need about 2gr less of S355 to reach the same velocity as the moly-coated 175gr Rhinos.
A few notes to consider:
Don?t shoot moly and copper on the same day. The tarnishing caused by these two types of bullets requires different cleaning methodologies.
With higher velocities generated in especially 303 Enfields, these rifles are not as easy on the shoulder anymore.
Moly-coated bullets need more powder than copper bullets of the same weight for the same velocity. When loading up for copper bullets of the same weight, USE LESS POWDER.
As with all Reloading articles, I do not accept responsibility for other peoples? efforts, neither will the Reloading Association accept any responsibility. These loads were safe to fire in my rifle and Rudi?s rifle. Reloaders have to ensure that they heed to the signs of over-pressure before the danger-point is reached.

Q. What will be the implications if I shoot GSC moly coated bullets with my rifle and thereafter non-coated conventional bullets?
A. Every single problem associated with moly coating can be laid at the door of the application. If the application is of good quality and uniform, moly brings only advantages. Most moly kits deal with small quantities of bullets and very rough methods of moly quantity measurement. It is easy to get it wrong and thereby introduce variables and inconsistencies. Moly is also not the magic substance it is made out to be by some sellers. We determine coating thickness and application by rigidly controlling the weight of the bullets coated and the weight of the moly in batches of several thousand bullets. Moly is also not the only component of our coating. There is another part to it.
The result is that our moly does not leave a build up, needs no special cleaning methods, does not affect the use of uncoated bullets, is not affected by the use of uncoated bullets, will not increase accuracy, does not increase BC and will not rust the bore any faster than normally, if left uncleaned for some time. Our moly will make the rifle easier to clean, reduce fouling, increases shot strings before accuracy falls off, increases speed slightly, prevents the bullets from tarnishing and protects the throat of the rifle from erosion to a greater degree than when absent. We do not supply uncoated bullets, even on special order, anymore. We do not fret about it anymore.

Gerhard, ek het gevind S355werk beter met die swaarder koeels soos die 200gr en 215gr. S335 werk nog steeds vir my die beste met die 174 of 175gr koeels

Ek stem 100% saam met jou.
Met S335 het die 303 met 175gr en 180gr baie mooi gegroep in die verlede en hele paar bokke op 200 meter laat bakkie ry.
Ek gaan beslus nog speel met die 215gr en S355 om te sien wat ek kan reg kry met die kombinasie.
