260 Rem or 243 Win ??

Post by Roy Sparks »

I have a Pre'64 Win rifle in 243 featherweight. Its got to have its 3rd barrel fitted.

I have heard a lot of good reports about the 260 Rem and was wondering about converting for this cartridge instead of 243 Win.

I would like expert opinions please.

My 243 Win is my eerste keuse geweer vir algemene jag hier in die Ooskaap.

Wat gaan my beter dien ?

I think the 260 is worth a try if you go through barrels quite frequently. If it turns out to be a mistake it should be short-lived? I have both and could not argue against either. In the context of your battery I would see a slot for a 260.

I don't purport to be an expert but I am of the understanding that all things being equal the 260 should have a bit more punch, a bit better SD, a flatter long range trajectory and somewhat better wind bucking ability than a 243. That all being said I often think that these differences sometimes tend to be somewhat academic under normal hunting conditions and distances where variations due to the rifleman are of greater impact than the differences between the practical performance of two calibres which are close cousins.

I would forsake velocity for better inherent accuracy and flatter trajectory. I would like the option of building a super accurate moderate recoil rifle on that pre '64 action that will be good on vermin and larger game - with the appropriate choice of projectiles for the needs.

Can 243 brass be formed for the 260 ?

Are there any core bonded softs or partitions for the 260 ?

Roy, the way I read your sentences you contradict yourself in each one ...

You have rifles for larger game. I would say you should look at the 6XC if you want a more inherent accurate cartridge. You will get 243 performance with less powder and longer barrel life.

Voordele:
1. Baie vergewingsgesind as dit kom by herlaai.
3. Ek ervaar nie so tekort an herlaaikomponente soos sommiges sê nie - ja doppe was onlangs skaars gewees, maar dit was die geval in amper alle kalibers. Doplewe is uitstekend. Ek sou Lapua doppe aanbeveel - nekwanddiktes varieer met minder as 1/1000 van duim en konsentrisiteit van my gelaaide rondtes is baie goed - gewoonlik onder 1/1000'e en nooit meer as 3/1000'e nie. Boonop kan jy altyd doppe vorm vanaf .243 of .308.
7. Herlaai kostes: lapua doppe (R15 - maar kan ten minste tien keer laai dus R1,50 per rondte), primer R1,50, punte R3-10 per punt, kruit ongeveer 42gr (160 Rondtes per blik dus ongeveer R2.10 vir kruit) Dus totale gelaaid rondte R8.10-RR15.10.

Nadeel:

Roy
I'm with Arnold et al. One of the 6mm with better barrel life and low fuel economy makes more sense, if you have to satisfy the urge to make a change. If you were looking for a hunting rifle only the 260 would be great. But you have that covered with the others.
But.
One thing you do have to consider is the fixed cost of converting from 243. You will have to make a big investment and with the availability of components it may take more RRR and time to find components. In the 243 you know what you have. Look at better barrels, longer length in order to cut the throat at a later stage.

Nosler Ballistic Tip hunting is a very accurate bullet, I find them hard enough for brain shots on larger animals. Or Custom Competition if you get the right twist.

Hallo Roy you can maar follow Arnold's advice. I'm changing mine to a 260 rem after the hunting season. I must just decide if I'm going to AI it or not

I want to put a spanner in the works , I agree that a 260 is fantastic, and I will purchase one in a heartbeat, but please look at the 6.5x 47 all components freely available and a really fantastic rifle, gives better barrel life and lower recoil" according to the experts" this is truly a stunning caliber.

.303 ... vir dieselfde BC as 'n 155gr in 308 kan jy 'n 107gr in 6.5mm skiet.
Die 107gr kan jy egter teen 3300 fps skiet >:D

Jonie, I see the 6.5x47 at an even further disadvantage than the 260 Rem when looking at speed and flat trajectories and therefore my recommendation of the 6XC, which will be fast and flat shooting with mild recoil and better barrel life than the 243 Win.

I had a 243 and have the 6.5 now and I will not go back to the 243 again once you used the 6.5 you are hooked

I suggest you try the 260 you wont regret it

Good day.
I'm posting for two reasons. One, I love to use the spel-checker on my phone and and it works better with English. ;D

No.2 is either to through a spanner in your works or to confirm half of what the gents posted before me. Seeing that you are going to re-barrel, why not AI the 243 on a 1 in 8 twist barrel. Alas, flatter trajectory, lower pressure, higher BC projectiles and the only new piece of reloading equipment you need is a full-size die.

That is my plan for the future when my 243's barrel goes south.

Gawie
